Wonder Introduction

We are going to begin reading Wonder by R. J. Palacio!

Typically in the spring, all 5th graders read this amazing book! We don't want any of you to miss out on this opportunity. We will be posting chapters to read, discussion questions, and some links to be able to share this experience with you, even from home!!

Before Reading: Respond to one of the following questions.

Have you ever felt different? How did people treat you? Describe your feelings. Were they good or bad?

What does it mean to be ordinary? What makes someone extraordinary?

  1. I figured I will start off the conversation to get us going.

There have certainly times in my life I have felt different. Specifically in middle school I was a little awkward and kids seemed to think I was weird. This definitely made me feel sad but has also taught me that everyone is different.

I think that to be ordinary it means to be like everyone else. To be extraordinary I think means to be extra special.

    1. Thank you for sharing Mrs. McInerney, I know it can be hard to share personal experiences when you feel different. I, too, felt different in middle school. I transferred to a new school in 7th grade and didn’t know anyone. Most of the other 7th graders had gone to elementary school together and had been friends since kindergarten. It was so hard feeling different.

I also agree with your definition of extraordinary meaning extra special. I often think of Stephen being extraordinary, as I’m sure you do too!!!! I hope you’re enjoying these extra snuggles this last week with him!

  2. Ms. Anderson... I believe that everyone has times in their life when they feel different, that time for me was in high school. I never really fit in. Most of the kids came from other towns and had more money than we did. Due to this they looked at me differently, as if I wasn't as good as them. However something inside of me never really let that get me down. I found what made me happy. That would be horses!! I have always had horses in my life and have done anything it took to be able to enjoy the love I have for them.

To me being ordinary means to not be true to yourself. Extraordinary means to live your dreams, work towards the desires you have in your life, and to know that everyone is extraordinary in some way, we all have something special to offer the world. No one person is better than another.

  3. Hi everyone,

I catch myself feeling different when I start new things or when I am around new people. I feel very different or self conscious. But once I start to talk to new people I realize we have things in common and that we can relate to one another. I try to remember this when I meet new people.

I believe being ordinary means blending in. Extraordinary means you are your self and not afraid to show it! I think of my niece Kelsey. She has her own sense of style, loves sports, space, science, karate, etc. Kids at school tell her she likes "boy stuff" and at first this hurt her feelings. But then she realized these are the things she loves and it doesn't matter if you are a boy or a girl, you like what you like! I am proud of her for not just being "ordinary" to fit in.

    2. Hi! For this first section you will be answering the two questions at the top of the page. For the next part where it says chapters 1-10 you will listen to the YouTube video. It’s 8 hours long but the first 10 chapters go until the 48 minute mark. Once you have listened to the chapters you will answer the five questions. Then there is an open response as well. You will answer those questions all in a comment like this one. Please make sure when you comment that you put your name so that we know who you are!
